BEIJING, February 29 (TMTPOST)—Sony Interactive Entertainment, the gaming subsidiary of Sony Group, will cut approximately 900 jobs, accounting for about 8% of its global workforce. This decision comes as part of Sony's ongoing shift in focus from hardware manufacturing to gaming services, adapting to the rapidly changing gaming industry.

Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the need for adjustments amidst the current economic and market conditions. The restructuring will impact key game development studios in the United States and Europe.

In the U.S., influential studios like Insomniac Games, known for the \"Marvel's Spider-Man\" series, and Naughty Dog, the developer of the \"The Last of Us\" series, will be affected. In Europe, Guerrilla, responsible for the \"Horizon\" series, and Firesprite, which worked on the game \"Horizon Call of the Mountain,\" are among the impacted studios.

Meanwhile, the London studio of PlayStation Studios, which previously focused on virtual reality (VR) game development, will be shut down. With the disappointing sales of the PS VR2 and changing market dynamics, the VR-centric studio may have lost its strategic relevance.

The job cuts are accompanied by the suspension of certain online service game projects that were in development.

The move is driven, in part, by a myriad of headwinds against the company’s gaming business. In the third quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, Sony reported a 25.9% year-on-year decrease in operating profit for its Game & Network Services business due to rising expenses related to marketing hardware products and declining sales of first-party games.

With the sales of the PS5 gradually plateauing after nearly four years since its launch, Sony is seeking new avenues for profit growth beyond console and first-party game sales. The company has acknowledged a downward trend in PS5 sales and a need to find alternative sources of revenue.

The gaming industry has witnessed several major players, including Microsoft and Riot Games, announcing significant layoffs in the wake of a slower growth trajectory following the pandemic. As the cost of developing successful AAA games continues to rise, game developers and studios face increasingly precarious situations in the future.
